Matthew Chapter 8
Icebreaker: Describe a time when you had to put your complete faith and trust in someone to do something for you. If you had any concerns, what were they and why did you have them?
Introduction: Last week we finished our study of Jesus’ famous Sermon on the Mount that He gave in Matthew Chapters 5-7. Today in Matthew chapter 8 we will learn about Jesus healing, teaching, performing a miracle over nature, and casting out demons. My goal in this study is to broaden our understanding of Jesus’ earthly ministry which will deepen our understanding of His divine nature and discuss why He performed these miracles.
Read Matthew 8:1-4; When Jesus came down from the mountain, large crowds followed Him. 2 And a leper came to Him and bowed down before Him, and said, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” 3 Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. 4 And Jesus said to him, “See that you tell no one; but go, show yourself to the priest and present the offering that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”
What did you notice about the man described in these verses?
The man was a leper who believed Jesus’ is the Messiah which he proved when he came and bowed down before Jesus. The man shows his faith in Jesus’ divine nature when he says; “Lord if You are willing, You can make me clean.” The man believed Jesus had the ability to heal him that is why he asked Jesus to heal him.
In verse 3 how does Jesus respond to the man?
Jesus reached out with His hand and touched the man and said; “I am willing; be cleansed”. And immediately the man’s leprosy was gone. Remember that no one would even come near to a leper let alone purposely touch one like Jesus did. Jesus touched the leper to prove that He had the authority over all diseases.
In verse 4 why do you think Jesus says what he does to the man?
Jesus was attracting enough crowds to Himself that is why I believe He told the man not to tell anybody. Jesus did instruct the man to go and show himself to the priest and present the offering that Moses commanded. Jesus did this as a testimony to prove to the priests and religious leaders that He did have the power and authority over disease and the Law because He was the Son of God-the Messiah who He claimed to be.
Note: Imagine the stunning impact on the priest when the healed leper shows up. Up to that time the only Israelite cured of leprosy was Miriam (Num. 12:10-15). That is how rare it was for leprosy to be healed.
Read Matthew 8:5-9; And when Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, imploring Him, 6 and saying, “Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, fearfully tormented.” 7 Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.” 8 But the centurion said, “Lord, I am not worthy for You to come under my roof, but just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.
Note: A centurion was a Roman army officer who commanded approximately 100 men. It was a position of great responsibility in the Roman occupation force in Israel.
What do these verses tell us about the centurion?
The centurion loved his Jewish servant enough to publicly plead/beg Jesus to heal his paralyzed and tormented servant. Did you notice in verse 7 how the centurion responded when Jesus said he would come and heal his servant? The centurion humbled himself before Jesus when he said I am not worthy for You to come into my house. (Remember that most Romans despised the Jewish people).
-The centurion shows his faith in Jesus to heal when he says; “just say the word, and my servant will be healed’. The centurion being in a position of authority, recognized that Jesus had the power and authority and ability to perform miracles.
Read Matthew 8:10-13; Now when Jesus heard this, He marveled and said to those who were following, “Truly I say to you, I have not found such great faith with anyone in Israel. 11 I say to you that many will come from east and west, and recline at the table with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven; 12 but the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 13 And Jesus said to the centurion, “Go; it shall be done for you as you have believed.” And the servant was healed that very moment.
In verse 10 how does Jesus respond to what the centurion said?
Jesus marveled at the centurion’s statement of faith. (Remember the centurion was a Gentile). Jesus must have shocked the Jewish people when He says that never before in Israel has He found anyone with such great faith. If you were a Jewish person you would have been insulted by Jesus saying this pagan had more faith than any Israelite.
What is the meaning of what Jesus says in verses 11-12?
In verse 11 when Jesus says that many will come from the east and west He is referring to the gentiles that will be saved and converted when they believe the preached gospel message. This harvest of the gentiles will be culminated at the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.
-In verse 12 the sons of the kingdom refers to the Jewish people to whom the kingdom of heaven was intended for. Since the majority of the Jews have rejected Jesus Christ and the gospel message they with all who reject Jesus Christ will be cast into the outer darkness/hell (lake of fire) where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Note: Outer darkness is a common Jewish imagery for the place of eternal punishment for the wicked-hell.
What does verse 13 tell us is the result of the centurion’s faith?
Because of the centurions great faith and belief in Jesus Christ his servant is healed. Remember that the centurion was a Gentile-a pagan.
Note: In this teaching Jesus emphasizes the foolishness of Israel’s rejection of Him and the Messiah and the wisdom of the Gentile in recognizing Jesus at the Son of God.
Read Matthew 8:14-17; When Jesus came into Peter’s home, He saw his mother-in-law lying sick in bed with a fever. 15 He touched her hand, and the fever left her; and she got up and waited on Him. 16 When evening came, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed; and He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were ill. 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet: “He Himself took our infirmities and carried away our diseases.”
What does Jesus do in these verses?
Jesus starts by going to Peter’s home and when He sees his ill mother in law, Jesus touches her hand and the fever immediately leaves her. The news must have spread of Jesus’ miracles and that He was staying at Peter’s house. When evening came they brought to Jesus many who were demon-possessed and ill. Jesus doesn’t touch the demon possessed; He casts out the spirits by His power and word (exorcism). Once he casts the demons out, verse 16 tells us that He healed all the ill which fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah the prophet (See Isaiah 53:4).
Read Matthew 8:18-22; Now when Jesus saw a crowd around Him, He gave orders to depart to the other side of the sea. 19 Then a scribe came and said to Him, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.” 20 Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” 21 Another of the disciples said to Him, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.” 22 But Jesus said to him, “Follow Me, and allow the dead to bury their own dead.”
What is Jesus teaching in verses 18-20?
In verse 19 a scribe comes to Jesus and says he will follow Him wherever He goes. As I re-read Jesus’ response in verse 20 think about what Jesus is saying to the scribe. I believe Jesus was telling the scribe that it won’t be easy to follow Him and that the scribe should consider the cost of commitment to be Jesus’ disciple.
Note: in verse 20 Jesus refers to Himself as the Son of Man (He used this title more than 80 times). Jesus uses this name to link Himself to the earth and to His mission here. Other titles of Jesus: Son of God-Jesus’ divine name; Son of David-His Jewish name.
What is Jesus teaching in verses 21-22?
When Jesus said; “Follow Me, and allow the dead to bury their own dead” He wasn’t trying to be harsh but He was emphasizing the urgency to be doing the Father’s business. Jesus was saying let the spiritually dead bury the physically dead but you come follow Me. The man was making excuses for not immediately following Jesus. I believe Jesus was teaching the man and us to be His “true” disciple requires full commitment.
Read Matthew 8:23-27; When He got into the boat, His disciples followed Him. 24 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being covered with the waves; but Jesus Himself was asleep. 25 And they came to Him and woke Him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing!” 26 He said to them, “Why are you afraid, you men of little faith?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it became perfectly calm. 27 The men were amazed, and said, “What kind of a man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”
What is Jesus doing during the storm?
During the great storm that covered the sea with the waves, Jesus was sound asleep. What thoughts or comments do you have on this?
How do the disciples respond to the storm?
In contrast to Jesus’ peaceful state, the disciples were afraid and fearful thinking they were going to die. That is why they woke Jesus, asking Him to save them. It must have been hard for them to believe that Jesus could be sleeping in the midst of this chaos. The fact that they asked Jesus to save them shows they believed He could do something to help them but I am sure they had no idea what He would do.
How does Jesus respond to the storm?
First, Jesus tells them they are afraid because of their lack of faith. Then Jesus gets up and rebukes the wind and sea and it becomes perfectly calm. Wow!-What an awesome miracle demonstrating that Jesus had authority over the entire earth, including the forces of nature. I believe in verse 27 you can see why Jesus performed this miracle because He knew the impact it would have on the disciples. I believe Jesus was giving them another example to prove to them that He was who He claimed to be-the Son of God.
Note: When the storms of life come, do you ask Jesus to save you because you know He can?
Read Matthew 8:28-34; When He came to the other side into the country of the Gadarenes, two men who were demon-possessed met Him as they were coming out of the tombs. They were so extremely violent that no one could pass by that way. 29 And they cried out, saying, “What business do we have with each other, Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?” 30 Now there was a herd of many swine feeding at a distance from them. 31 The demons began to entreat Him, saying, “If You are going to cast us out, send us into the herd of swine.” 32 And He said to them, “Go!” And they came out and went into the swine, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and perished in the waters. 33 The herdsmen ran away, and went to the city and reported everything, including what had happened to the demoniacs. 34 And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw Him, they implored Him to leave their region.
What do the demons that possessed the men say to Jesus?
Verse 29 tells us that the demons knew Jesus’ divine nature when they call Him the Son of God and ask Him if He came to torment them before the time. This shows that the demons know that Jesus has authority over them and that on the Day of Judgment they will receive their final destruction (lake of fire-Rev. 20:10).
-In verse 31 the demons knew that Jesus had the power and authority over them so they ask Him to send them into the herd of swine. I believe the demons request to go into the pigs to avid being sent to the abyss which will be their ultimate doom.
What does verse 32 tell us that Jesus does? Jesus only needs to say one word to the demons to cast them out of the men-“Go”. This shows His power and authority over demonic forces. The demons go into the swine and the whole herd rushes over a cliff and dies in the sea. I believe Jesus knew this was going to happen and wanted to use this situation to get the attention of the people in Gadarenes so He could teach them.
How do the people respond to what Jesus did? No one celebrated the fact that the demoniacs were now set free and no longer demon possessed. Instead of taking advantage of having Jesus in they region, they implored (begged) Jesus to leave. The entire city missed an opportunity to be blessed by Jesus. They must have been more concerned about the loss of their pigs than the miracle Jesus performed in their midst.
Note: Great example that we don’t want to be so focused on our circumstances that we miss a blessing from God.
Recap: I believe Jesus healed the sick, cast out demons, and performed the miracle of calming the storm with a specific purpose in mind. That was to show the disciples and all of us that He has authority over everything, which includes nature and the destructive powers (demonic forces) of the Satan. We must believe in Him and trust that He has the power and control to deliver us from all the situations that we go through in life. But, we have to put ourselves in a right relationship with Him so He will respond when we call out to Him to deliver us out of our difficult times. We can’t expect Him to respond to us if the only time we call out to Him is when we want something. We have to be in a right relationship with God if we expect Him to Hear and answer our prayers.
Closing thought: To get in a right relationship with God, to live the life God wants us to live and to have the ability to love and obey Him in the way Jesus teaches, starts when we surrender our will to His will. This spiritual rebirth or born-again experience will allow God to change (transform) us from the inside out to be the man and woman of God that He desires us to be.
Our prayer is that everyone reading or hearing this teaching has or will ask Jesus Christ to be their Lord and Savior so they can receive eternal life. Jesus clearly teaches that He is the only way to heaven: that no church, religion, religious activities, being a good person or anything else will get us to heaven.
Look at what Jesus says in John 14:6; “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me.
There is no greater decision to make in life before we die. Jesus confirms this in Luke 16:19-31 in the parable of Lazarus and the rich man when He shows that once we die we can’t pass from hell to heaven.
Our prayer is that each of you has or will accept God’s offer of salvation. We are available to answer any questions you may have regarding salvation. We are also here to pray for any needs that you may have.
